Artist Black58 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar

This classic style guitar has existed in many forms since it was first released in 1958. Since then it has been coveted by some of the greatest Rock 'n Roll, Blues, and Jazz guitarists that the world has ever known. Legendary names like BB King, Freddie King, John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton, Jorma Kaukonen, Eric Clapton, and Elvin Bishop are among the multitude of players who have loved the diverse tones that this type of instrument offers. Now it's your turn!

The Artist Black58 offers a perfect entry-level guitar for those wishing to begin their journey into the world of blues and Jazz. With the typical set-neck, this guitar is truly a "blues machine". Like the body, the neck is constructed of maple on an Eco-Rosewood fretboard. This wood is a fine substitute for rosewood which is now considered a highly endangered species and as a result is rarely if ever used in general guitar building these days. The 22 frets show off the 'Dot' shaped plastic inlays and the comfortable "C" shape neck, tune-o-Matic bridge and stop-bar tailpiece means you have a guitar that will not only feel great under your fingers but one that will sustain forever.

The Black58 sports chrome-covered Humbuckers with Alnico V magnets which means that you have the option of the warm throaty tones of the neck pickup or the biting clean sounds of the bridge pickup. When you set your toggle switch in between neck and bridge pickup you get that wonderful almost out of phase sound which confirms that this is an extremely versatile guitar that will be very responsive under your fingers. You will be able to put a stamp on all those great blues solos and wail like the greats or you could darken the tone to suit the "cool" of any dingy little jazz club.

Let handed Black 58 - fantastic!

By: on 26 October 2024
I missed out on the left handed version of this last year (note Artist - make the 58DLX version in left handed black version please), but managed to find one still in the packaging second hand. The seller was a new guitarist and was upgrading for a name. He missed out. This is as good, of not better, than my Epiphone 335. Chunky neck that feels good to play, the pups are excellent (I may upgrade to my favourite 490 set, but not pressing), colour is great, action is lovely. My luthier was impressed - I was expecting negativity but he talked about the quality for the price. This is my second Artist Guitar, this is by far the best. If you are after a 335 but can;t afford the $5grand for the Big G, this is an excellent guitar and worthy of your attention. If the 58 comes out in the DLX version in black left handed, I will buy another. Please Artist Guitars- a few more colours for us lefties!!!

Artist Black 58 Semi Hollow Guitar

This is the second guitar I have purchased from Artist guitars. Ordered it as a factory second. To be honest I cannot find any cosmetic faults at all. After a fret polish string change and personal set up, this 335 -style guitar plays extremely well. The black finish looks great. Delivery to Melbourne only took three days, great service from Artist guitar again.

Another one for the students, and another winner

By: on 11 March 2024
I ordered this as a guitar for students to play at the high school I teach at. I was a little nervous about buying such a big / good looking guitar for students to flog around... However, a month on from getting this into the hands of our students the guitar still looks and plays like it did straight out of the box. There is no question, it is a striking looking instrument. Finish, binding, neck, tuners all punch way above the weight of this guitars price point. The pickups, whilst not Artist's signature bullbuckers, provide a good variety of tones that suit a range of styles that our students are playing. The action was a little higher than suited my personal preference (but definitely not 'bad'), I didn't adjust it favouring the option of getting this into student rotation ASAP and none of the students have mentioned that they find it hard to play. This one will get a workout at school performances no doubt! Thanks again Artist Guitars!

This is a winner

I have had a Japanese Fender Strat belonging to our son stored at our house for a decade so that has been my main guitar, but I may never play it again. This beast is amazing. Action is spot on. The tonal range is epic. It hat lots of grunt and it's particularly good in the twilight between clean and driven. I also have an Artist fretless bass and J bass and I may clean out my rack to have some more.

Very happy

At different times I have had a red one and a black one of these guitars. They both looked incredible and played very nicely. In my opinion you couldn't find a better guitar for the price. Also, at one stage I needed some customer support, and their service was extremely good. Highly recommend Artist Guitars.

Black beauty

Beautiful looking guitar. Not bad for an entry level guitar. Sounds great, nice easy action straight out of the box. Artist guitars have done it again, a good quality instrument for a measly $300.00. Fourth guitar from artist and extremely happy. Quick delivery as usual and extremely happy with sound quality and pleased to add this beauty to my stable. Thanks again Artist, just love this baby,

Review Artist BLACK58 Blackburst Semi-Hollow Elect

By: on 15 June 2022
So I'll start at the start. I am mainly a Fender and Epiphone player and have 11 guitars. Thing was, I didn't have a 335 style guitar and wanted one, then I have all the major styles covered, Strat, Tele and archtop etc. But the 335 was never a "oh god I need one of these" type things and as such I was not willing to spend Epiphone, Gibson or Ibanez type money on one. Instead I Googled my heart away watching YouTube reviews of affordable 335 style guitars. Kept coming across Artist and all reviews were excellent, and as I had been a customer of Artist since 2015 I thought yeah, okey dokey, Artist it shall be. This would be only the second guitar I had bought from them, so I was curious to see where they had evolved to as a company, both instrument quality and customer experience. Yes precious, we chooses the BLACK58! Firstly I messaged Artist to ask if I pay now online, am I am able to drive over and pick it up immediately. Received an answer within 60 seconds saying all good, come give her a new home. I drive out to Yennora, which was an effort, had a quick chat to a really nice guy there, and as he handed over the box he reminded me that "anything wrong at all give us a call and customer service will fix it up". Good customer service focus so far. So I will run few a few things in the order I checked them out. Packaging was excellent, guitar was in mint condition and well padded, included a guitar cable, you can never have too many, an Allan key and a couple of picks. The finish is outstanding, lovely high gloss, good depth in the colour and the binding was good too. Frets? I was surprised as this guitar was literally good to go from the box, I didn't have to touch the frets, however I did give them a 5 minute buff and clean. But more because I can, I honestly could have left it as it was and not had any sharp ends etc. Very nice surprise. I lowered the action just a touch and it was playing beautifully! The fingerboard was quite dry and a little scratchy when bending notes, so I then conditioned the finger board. That has made a difference and it can now wear in after playing it a little more. I also liked the range of the tone knobs, even in some quite expensive guitars you have to turn the knob a fair way before it kicks in to changing the tone, these tone controls are very responsive and change almost on first slight turn of the knob. Very nice. Tone wise I am happy with the pickups in it, and bear in mind my version is the $299.00 model so it does not have coil splitting etc. I like the middle position with both pups on, nice range of tones with a bit of tweaking. I managed to get a nice Benson tone happening, along with blues and some funk. I use a Marshall MG30FX and the crunch channel on it gave me some great hard rock AC/DC type sounds. You can get anything from Benson groove, to Tele twangy and back to AC/DC. Even after playing this for less than an hour I am already understanding why so many people say a 335 is the most versatile guitar on the market. It really does allow you to switch from genre to genre without the need to change pedals and guitars. Overall I can't really pick anything bad about it. If I had to be really picky I'd say a couple of tiny areas on the binding could be better, but honestly you need a magnifying glass to detect it and I am being super picky. At $299.00 you don't expect perfection, but this is damn close. I have a feeling the more I play this guitar the more I will like it and understand it's personality and sound. I did change the knobs from that goldy bronze colour because I just dislike the look of them, so I added 4 black knobs, which look killer on the black body, and I added a black Rhythm/Treble poker chip on the selector switch. Looks a million times better. Is it the best guitar I have had or have? No it's not. But it is probably the best value electric I have ever bought. People say these are as good as the Epiphone, being honest I have to disagree. However the Epiphones are about 3 times the price, so unless you want to spend an additional $600 or so for not a huge difference in quality, I'd say jump on one of these Artist BLACK58's and get all the groove without the dollars. At the end of the day this guitar looks stunning, it sounds great, it's versatile and I would have no problem gigging with it. Really happy with my latest Artist experience.
