Artist ABJ60CEQ Natural Acoustic Electric Bass w/ EQ

The ABJ60CEQ is an exceptional sounding, no-frills acoustic bass. It sports a deep jumbo body (110 - 115 mm) ensuring that you will achieve that nice level of low end which is such a necessary attribute of a great acoustic bass sound. Importantly the body is constructed entirely of high-quality laminated timber - spruce on the top and laminated ash on the back and sides with an Okume wood neck. This ensures that the sound is not too ""bright"" and can be more easily controlled without the annoying concerns related to excessive feedback which can be a problem with solid wood acoustic bass guitars.

It has a built-in Fishman Presys II pre-amp and tuner that makes this bass not only great for live performance but also for recording

Great value bass at a high quality standard

By: on 22 November 2024
I’m always amazed that a relatively small company like Artist Guitars can consistently design and build products that are not only good quality, but come in at very reasonable prices. Having bought more Artist gear (guitars, basses, amps, ukes, mandos, etc.) than I can count over the past 11+ years, I therefore had no qualms about ordering the ABJ60CEQ. These days, I’m mostly a 5-string bass player, but a 4-stringer — particularly an acoustic — is worth owning too, because ….. well, just because :-) ………. DELIVERY & UNBOXING: Took three days to get to me in S.E. Queensland, which is reasonable. It would be nice if AG offered an Australia Post “Express Post” option (at extra cost), but perhaps this package would be too big for A.P.’s strict size limitations(?), so patience is a virtue, I guess. Packing (sturdy cardboard box) was perfectly adequate, and the couriers didn’t manage to break anything.. ………. FINISH & SET-UP: As always, the finish of this unit was immaculate — Artist’s quality control ex their Chinese factories is always impressive! Intonation was pretty much spot-on (which is good, because, unlike an electric, it’s kinda hard to fix if it’s bad on an acoustic, short of bridge surgery!). Action was low enough for my preference. Neck width at the nut is 44mm, which is a little wider than the average 4-string electric bass, but about on a par with my 5-stringers. And at 30.5 inches and 20 frets, this is of course a short-scale unit, with the usual 4-stringer being more like 34 inches. Machine heads seem decent enough. Oh, and incidentally, just ignore the puzzling reference on the website to a (quote) “CNR4” under the “Battery” heading — this thing just uses the standard 9V battery common to almost all active guitars. (There’s one supplied with the bass.) ………. ACCESSORIES: Two guitar picks to add to my collection of literally hundreds :-), plus the obligatory Allen Key for neck adjustment, should you be brave enough. You still need to find your own lead, strap, etc., although there are strap pins fitted. ………. SOUND & PLAYABILITY: Acoustically/unamplified, this bass is passably loud (as demonstrated in the website video), but I won’t be using it that way (I play in a large church worship band, so I simply wouldn’t be heard if I unplugged!). However, it would, I think, just get by in a small ensemble / intimate atmosphere with say, just an acoustic guitar and a vocalist. And, of course, unplugged is fine for home practice. Plugged in, on the other hand, it really comes to life — I play through a Markbass MB58R CMD 102 PURE (what is it with Markbass and long amp names?!?), and/or a Fender Rumble Stage 800, and the output of this bass ranges from punchy to what I call “dull thump”. Of course, the two-band (Treble/Bass) Fishman on-board EQ (with inbuilt tuner) doesn’t provide for a lot of tweaking (in particular, the Treble control makes very little difference at all), but I also have a 10-band EQ pedal (Boss EQ-200) on my board, which pretty much allows me to get the tone I want. ,,,,,,,,,, STRINGS: Out of the box, the bass comes fitted with 45-105 roundwounds, and A.G. has told me these are actually acoustic bass strings (phosphor bronze or 80/20 bronze), as opposed to standard electric bass strings. I couldn’t determine what the brand was (perhaps the famous “Unbranded”?), but Fender 8060s, Elixir 14502s, and D’Addario EPBB170s all seem to be possible replacements. ………. GIG BAG: I also ordered this bag as part of the deal. For just an extra $10, that’s a no-brainer, particularly as it’s $35 if you buy it separately. I would prefer a hard case, but there doesn’t seem to be one on the AG site that will fit this bass. The gig bag is ….. well, it’s a gig bag — adequate to protect your instrument from small bumps and wayward drummers, but the inbuilt padding is hardly weapons-grade. ………. OVERALL: Look, my wife will tell you I own far too many guitars/basses/amps/pedals/etc., and she’s right — that’s Gear Acquisition Syndrome for you. But I really do appreciate a very well-made instrument at a decent price, and that’s my verdict on the ABJ60CEQ. No, it won’t replace my various 5-stringers, which will by necessity remain my main workhorses, but, for something different, this AG model would be hard to beat. Is this the world’s best acoustic bass? Of course not. But, for great quality control and playability and good value, I give it five stars.

Not my first Artist guitar purchase. I'm impressed with this acoustic bass. Well set up and the sound is comparable to ones priced a lot more. Sounds great unplugged or through an amp.

What a beauty Artist have done it again - after watching an online Artist review on this Bass placed order, out of the box this bass is magic there is not a thing that I can fault, easy to play, sounds great plugged into the amp or straight into the pa system and looks a treat. Over the last 4 decades as a working musician, I have played and collected a lot of guitars of all styes and brands including the number one brands. I discovered Artist guitars a few years ago having now purchased 6 different models and built 3 kits, everyone is great proudly part of my guitar collection. Value and quality for your money, fantastic!

Great acoustic bass for the price

By: on 24 April 2020
For the price I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The tone, playability and volume are all good. I haven't tried plugging it in yet so can't comment on that. The only slight issue I have is that the build quality isn't great with some gaps in the internal bracing, but for the price I'm very happy with the bass.

Can't fault the service or value

By: on 17 July 2019
Delivered to Brisvegas within 24 hours of order, which is impressive. So is the bass -- nicely finished (on par with my Chinese Fender acoustic). Plays well, and the strings are acceptable which is rare on a new guitar. A couple of minor imperfections in the binding, but only when you go hunting for them. The downside? Not much. The frets are tarnished already, and it doesn't look like they've had any love in the factory. Nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of filing.
